Version update and install failures: version, size and signature checks
Record the exact install error and file source. The guides distinguish package, compatibility, storage and security checks without authenticating a file or recommending a forced installation.

How to read an install failure
Keep the error text, claimed version, file source and device information. A familiar filename, matching icon or similar size does not establish the file’s publisher.
Android checks package and signing relationships for updates. An install error may have several causes; it is not a reason to uninstall an existing app or disable Play Protect to force another file.
APK download bytes and installed storage are different measurements. If the source cannot be authenticated, stop rather than try a chain of mirrors. No APK was downloaded, installed or security-tested by this site.
Install error strings, and what they mean
| “App not installed” / generic failure | This message alone does not identify the cause. Possible checks include file validity, compatibility, existing-package conflict, storage and a security restriction. Do not force-install another mirror. |
|---|---|
| INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE | This can indicate an incompatible existing package or signing relationship. It does not authenticate the replacement file. Establish a valid update source rather than uninstall an existing app to bypass the conflict. |
| INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES | Certificate or signature validation failed. Keep the exact error and establish the file source; the message does not prove that another download will be safe. |
| “There was a problem parsing the package” | An invalid, incomplete or incompatible package can be a cause. The message does not identify which; record the device version and verify the declared compatibility and source. |
| “Blocked by Play Protect” | The scanner flagged the sideloaded file. Do not disable Play Protect to force it. Delete the file and use the publisher page or a store listing. |
| “Unknown source” blocked | Source permissions are granted to the installing app on current Android versions. Missing permission is not proof that a file is safe; do not grant access simply to force an unknown installation. |
What to record before considering an update
Required free storage depends on the package and device; there is no universal two-times-size check. A version code lower than the installed build cannot be installed as an update. A signing conflict is a reason to stop and establish the correct update source. A legitimate update must satisfy Android’s signing relationship, including valid key rotation where supported. Do not uninstall an existing app to force an unknown replacement; uninstalling can remove local data.
- Error and origin: keep the exact message, source URL, filename and timestamp. A size difference is a clue, not a diagnosis.
- Existing data: keep relevant account references; do not clear app data or uninstall an existing app simply to force another file.
- Identity: establish an accountable publisher and valid update relationship. If that cannot be done, stop; a different download URL does not establish either the same or a different app.
